My recent exploration in rendering the human figure, has centered on portraiture, leading me in part to exploit the commissioned portrait as a livelihood. My subject matter includes both self-portraits and portraits of friends: men, women, children, deceased loved ones, some famous but mostly ordinary people covering a wide cultural and social range of Americans and Mexicans belonging mostly to my personal world. They are meticulously rendered and placed in spatial settings that suggest internal and spiritual atmospheres. I play upon the dichotomies between the representational and flat, abstract forms, suggesting architectural and magical spaces.
